Lord Darkness

I finished this piece earlier this week as part of a project with the Brooklyn Super Hero Supply Co., an non-profit after school program that fronts as a super hero supply store. Its a really amazing store with plenty of supplies for all makes of superheroes, I definitely recommend a visit.
We were given a character description of either a superhero or a villain, written by one of the kids in the program, and asked to create the art to accompany the story. I was given "Lord Darkness".  He's "middle age but still suffers from childhood trauma (his parents gave him one crumb to eat every 20 months!) He travels in pure darkness and lives in his lair on Saturn."
This was definitely one of the best projects I've done in a while, and made something pretty different from what I'm used to making ... and used glitter- So very fun. You can't see the sparkle or layers too well from the scan (you can click the image to englarge), I collaged a texture for the background and then covered that with a layer of "gun metal" glitter, and then collaged over that. It was a good time.

I am very excited to tell you that soon you will be able to purchase a few of my collages from Little Paper Planes. They that sell some really awesomebeautiful prints, books and other cool things by many super talented artists, and I am so excited to become a part of their community! Here are the collages that will be for sale, they will probably be available in a month or so. I will let you know when they're up and for the taking!

 

New York Times

Sorry this took so long! It's been a busy week. Anywho. Here are the sketches for the New York Times Illustration I did last week! It was published in the paper on Tuesday, and you can see the final online here.

I got an e-mail earlier this morning from the art director of the New York Times Op-Ed page asking me to do an illustration for an article that will run this weekend! I am so excited and nervous. This is my first "big deal" illustration job. The size is tiny tiny, but I am still worried about what to do! Its a crazy short job - sketches due tomorrow morning and the final on friday! It's for their "Letters" section, in response to an article written about NASA's plans with Mars ...

Iannis Xenakis

So I'm trying to be more proactive this year, and as part of that I'm doing art-related outings (aka artfarting) every Friday with my friend Garrett- starting today! Of the few galleries we wandered into, the Iannis Xenakis exhibit at The Drawing Center, was really great. He was a modernist composer who studied civil engineering in Greece and worked with Le Corbusier in the 50s. Pretty awesome. The pictures I could find on the internet and from their site don't do the show much justice unfortunately, but if you live in New York, it's up until April 8th. Go see it!

"Iannis Xenakis: Composer, Architect, Visionary will explore the fundamental role of drawing in the work of Greek avant-garde composer Iannis Xenakis (1922–2001). A leading figure in twentieth century music, Xenakis was trained as a civil engineer, then became an architect and developed revolutionary designs while working with Le Corbusier. Comprised of over 60 documents created between 1953 and 1984, this will be the first North American exhibition dedicated to Xenakis’s original works on paper. Included will be rarely-seen hand-rendered scores, architectural drawings, conceptual renderings, pre-compositional sketches, and graphic scores. "

The Drawing Center almost always has great work up, and they have another show at the "drawing room" (Xenakis was in the main gallery), a group show titled Sea Marks. I didn't get to see it, but it looks pretty good, maybe next Friday!
